Argos add a pair of Americans

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts announced today the club has signed American WR Vince Mayle and American DB James Sample.

Mayle, 28, played three preseason games for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019, hauling in one pass for 14 yards after being signed by the club in September of 2018. After signing with the Baltimore Ravens at the end of 2016, the New Jersey native played 16 games for the Ravens in 2017, with two rushes for two yards and one touchdown. Previous to Baltimore, the 6’2, 247-pound pass catcher was signed by the Dallas Cowboys, where over the course of 2015-2016 he played in seven games. An original fourth round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2015, injuries derailed Mayle’s rookie season and he was released as part of final roster cuts that season.

A two-year player at Washington State (2013-2014), Mayle hauled in the fourth most receptions (106) and fifth most yards (1,483) in the NCAA during his senior season earning All-Pac-12 honours. Over Mayle’s two seasons for the Cougars he caught 148 passes for 2,022 yards and 16 touchdowns in 23 games. Attended Sierra College in 2012 where as a sophomore he caught 61 balls for 984 yards and 16 touchdowns, winning the conference’s offensive MVP award.

Sample, 27, was a member of the Washington Redskins during the 2018 offseason after being signed by the NFL team on January 1, 2018. The 6’2, 215-pound DB was selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars and appeared in four games his rookie season with two starts, tallying 15 tackles, before an injury cut his first season short. After spending the 2016 season on injured reserve, the Sacramento native was released by the Jags the following offseason in August 2017.

Sample played one season at the University of Louisville (2014), where over 13 games he registered 90 tackles and four interceptions. Previous to Louisville, Sample spent one year at American River College (2013) and two seasons at the University of Washington (2011-2012) where he played in five games.
