Argos add three Internationals
Sunday, June 3, 2018 — The Toronto Argonauts added three new International players to the roster today, WR/RET Mario Alford, DB Vondel Bell, and DB Maurice Carnell.
Alford, 24, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft and played one game as a rookie, registering one catch for 15 yards. After being released by the Bengals, Alford moved on to the New York Jets practice roster in November 2016 but after being released shortly thereafter, he found his way to the Cleveland Browns. In Cleveland, the 5’8, 177-pound Alford played in three games recording three punt returns for 68 yards and eight kick returns for 190 yards. After being released by Cleveland, Alford spent time on the Chicago Bears practice roster until he was waived in November 2017. After spending two seasons as a running back at Georgia Military, Alford moved on to the University of West Virginia where, over the course of two years, he compiled 92 receptions, 1,497 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns. His 11 touchdowns as a senior for the Mountaineers led the Big 12.
Bell, 24, joins the Argos after spending time at the Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp in early May. The 6’3, 195-pound Bell played four seasons at California University of Pennsylvania where he racked up 80 tackles, 65 of which were solo, 17 pass deflections, and four interceptions.
Carnell, 23, spent the previous two seasons at North Alabama helping the Lions to the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship but fell just short losing to Northwest Missouri State. In 23 career games at North Alabama, Carnell recorded 64 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 20 pass breakups. The San Diego, California native spent two seasons at Grossmont College in California previous to his transfer to NAU. At Grossmont, Carnell was named second-team All-Conference in 2015 and first-team All-Conference in 2014 as well as being voted Best Defensive Player.
The club also announced the release of International RB Khiry Robinson and International WR Chandler Worthy today.
