Training Camp Primer: Specialists

Argonauts.ca staff

TORONTO – Next up in our training camp primer series, we’ll take a look at the specialists, who spend much less time on the field than positional players, but whose role is no less vital to the team’s success..

Kicker/punter Swayze Waters returns for his fourth year with the Argonauts after the most successful season of his young career in 2014. Waters hit a league-leading 47 field goals in 2014, and his 90.4 field goal percentage was second only to Paul McCallum. Waters also led the league in total points (184) and punting average (38 yards) en route to being named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.

Challenging Waters in camp is Andrew Muzljakovich, a first-year pro who comes to the CFL from Olivet Nazarene University. Muzljakovich ranks fourth all-time in Olivet Tigers history in scoring, and averaged just under 40 yards per punt for his career. Muzljakovich also converted 64% of his field goal attempts, and was invited to A Bowl Game, which showcases the best non FBS players in America.

Jake Reinhart enters his sophomore season with the Argos after seizing the starting long snapper job as a rookie in 2014. A long snapper is doing his job best when he goes unnoticed, and in that regard Reinhart was nearly invisible last season. He is much more visible on social media however, showing off his insane accuracy in posts on his Instagram page.

Fellow long snapper Dan MacDonald was drafted with the Argonauts’ final selection in the seventh round of the 2015 CFL Draft, and he’ll go head to head with his former teammate in camp. MacDonald took over long-snapping duties for Reinhart in 2014 for the Gryphons as well as playing at fullback.
