Justin Dunk’s 2013 Cfl Mock Draft – V1.0

Teams around the Canadian Football League are deep in final preparations for the 2013 CFL Draft which is right around the corner, set for May 6. Yours truly has been locked in draft mode as well and pieced together a three-round mock draft. It was a fun process, but at the same time it’s certainly not easy when trying to predict what might go down on draft day. Especially when you factor in players who have been getting lots of National Football League interest, like Regina’s Stefan Charles or Eastern Michigan’s Andy Mulumba, both defensive linemen are expected to get picked in the NFL Draft.

In saying that, my mock draft was put together assuming both Charles and Mulumba are drafted by NFL clubs, meaning two of the top six players on the CFL Scouting Bureau fall in the Canadian Draft. There are a few other prospects that could get an NFL look as post-draft free agents as well, which might affect their CFL Draft stock. Anyways, a lot can change between now and draft day to affect what teams will do, but let’s get to the picks and if you agree, disagree or have any draft thoughts let’s keep the draft talk going on twitter @JDunk12. 

Order Team Player Skinny
1 Linden Gaydosh Gaydosh was the talk of the 2013 CFL Combine and the Ticats snag a player who should be a mainstay on the defensive front for years to come.
2 Ben D’Aguilar Some scouts aren’t sold on D’Aguilar, but there is no doubt he is a specimen. The Bombers like his athletic ability and think he has the potential to be a ratio-breaker at defensive end. 
3 Matt Sewell The Als, who start two non-import offensive tackles, jump on the best offensive tackle prospect that can come in and develop right away instead of waiting a year for an NCAA junior.
4 Mike Edem Edem’s best position fit might be at free safety, which gives the Riders depth behind Craig Butler. He should be a special teams demon from day one and could see playing time on defence in certain special packages.
5 Seydou Junior Haidara Local product had a big time showing at the combine and would instantly become the best Canadian receiver on the Alouettes roster.
6 Corey Watman Watman interviewed well at the combine and has lots of good film against quality competition from Eastern Michigan. BC gets some youth for the offensive line and a possible replacement for Angus Reid.
7  Brent Urban After losing Brian Bulcke in free agency the Stamps reload along the defensive line with the big Virginia Cavalier.
8 Nolan McMillan Flashes all kinds of potential when healthy for the Hawkeyes, needs to prove he can consistently stay on the field and out of the trainer’s room.
9  Brander Craighead Craighead has played a lot so far in his college career for the UTEP Miners. A local talent becomes the first draft pick of the new Ottawa franchise.

1 Jesse Joseph Started as a true freshman at UConn. Registered 8.5 sacks in 2011, tied for 26th in the NCAA. However, Joseph has been hampered by injury trouble since his sophomore season.
2 Mike DiCroce Proved he has the type of speed required to help make up for his lack of height with a 4.58 40-yard time at the combine. Scouts would like to believe they’re getting the 2011 Hec Crighton Trophy Finalist over the 2012 injury-hampered version of DiCroce.
3 Hunter Steward Might need some time to develop, but the buzz about him is building. Steward was recruited to Virginia as a defensive lineman, before going to Liberty, which suggests he might have a certain amount of athletic ability compared to a typical offensive lineman.
4 Bo Lokombo The Stamps gamble and take Lokombo who some view as the best player in the draft, but could end up in the NFL after his final year at Oregon.
5 Andy Mulumba Many CFL personnel men expect Mulumba to be taken in the NFL draft, which sees him slipping to the Alouettes at this spot in the second round.
6 Stefan Charles Scouts believe Charles will be picked in the NFL draft, which has him falling to the Ticats who would be ecstatic to get his CFL rights.
7 Hosam Shahin Shahin had his best season in 2012 at Rice. He recorded a career-best 45 tackles and led Conference USA interior linemen with 5 sacks a total that ranked him fifth in the nation.
8 Elie Ngoyi Ngoyi is still raw in terms of his technique and on field ability, but his athleticism, frame and upside has teams intrigued.
9 Connor Williams A defensive lineman out of Utah State, Connor Williams is a depth type of player who can give you some meaningful reps on the defensive side of the ball.

 

Order Team Player Skinny
1 Chris Mercer Mercer saw his stock rise with a solid showing in the one-on-one session at the combine.
2 Shane Bergman Bergman’s been flying under the radar, but has impressive size. If he gets his hands on a defender it’s over, although scouts would like to see him improve his footwork and agility. 
3 Steven Lumbala Lumbala is the best running back prospect in the draft who could fit nicely with the Lions and be allowed time to develop as a backup to Andrew Harris.
4 Brett Jones Jones goes to his hometown team and should fill a need at the same time for the Riders who lost backup centre Alexander Krausnick-Groh in free agency.
5 Yannick Morin-Plante

Morin Plante joins his Laval teammate Haidara as the Als continue to try to improve at Canadian receiver and give themselves more ratio flexibility.
6 Simon Le Marquand Le Marquand catches everything thrown his way and doesn’t mind going across the middle. He has a good frame for a CFL slot receiver.
7 Natey Adjei Adjei doesn’t have much film for scouts to evaluate, but he is an interesting prospect based on potential and time spent developing at an NCAA Division I school.
8 Matt Albright Albright put himself on CFL radars with a strong showing at the 2012 CIS East West Bowl and certainly possesses the size to play at the professional level.
9 Kalonji Kashama Kashama has great football bloodlines, all three of his brothers played division one football at Michigan, Connecticut and Western Michigan. All three played in the league at one time or another.
