A Look At The Picks

ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

TORONTO – With the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft approaching this Sunday, here is a look at how the draft breaks down by round and pick for the Argos.

 ROUND ONE – No Picks

After owning two first round picks once all was settled in last year’s draft, the Argos, barring a deal between now and the draft, will be merely spectators in the first round.  The Boatmen originally held the fourth overall pick but traded it to Winnipeg in the Steven Jyles trade.  Winnipeg now holds that pick as well as the first overall.

 ROUND TWO – 12th Overall

The Argos will make their first pick in the second round, 12th overall as they follow the B.C. Lions.

ROUND THREE- 18th Overall, 22nd Overall

The third round is where the Argos will have the most flexibility, holding two picks.  They jump up in the priority order to pick in Edmonton’s place in this round.  Their 18th overall pick originally came from Edmonton, the Esks then shipped it to Hamilton and the Ticats surrendered it to Toronto in the Arland Bruce lll trade in 2009.

The Argos will also select in Saskatchewan’s spot in this round (22nd overall) with a pick they acquired in 2008 when QB Michael Bishop was shipped to the Riders.

Note: The Argos original pick in this round was to be the 20th overall but it was sent, along with import WR TJ Acree, to Saskatchewan in early 2008 to acquire import DE Ronald Flemons (this trade has further implications later in this draft for the Boatmen).  The Riders later shipped the 20th overall pick to Hamilton in a trade that involved WR Prechae Rodriguez.

 ROUND FOUR – 27th Overall, 28th Overall

The Boatmen will pick back-to-back starting with their 27th overall pick and then right away at 28th overall. Toronto acquired the 28th selection when they traded OL Brian Ramsay to the Tiger-Cats last season.

Note: Montreal will use Edmonton’s pick in the second spot of this round (25th overall) after the Argos indirectly played middleman. The Boatmen acquired the pick from the Esks when they shipped WR Andre Talbot west in February 2010.  The Argos then re-packaged the pick and sent it to Montreal in exchange for all-star WR/KR Chad Owens on June 24, 2010.

 ROUND FIVE – 35th Overall, 38th Overall

Toronto will select in the 35th overall spot and then once again with the 38th pick which they acquired in 2008, along with import DE Ronald Flemons, in exchange for WR T.J. Acree in a trade with Saskatchewan.

 ROUND SIX- 43rd Overall

The Double Blue will conclude the draft by selected 43rd overall in the sixth round.
