John Murphy – Assistant General Manager

As the media focused on the signing of Michael Clemons as general manager in October 2019, the Argos appointed John Murphy as the team’s vice-president of player personnel on the same day.

His connection with Canada began in 2005 as a college and pro scout for the Montreal Alouettes, followed by a similar job with the Calgary Stampeders, where he was eventually elevated to the role of director of scouting.

The Merrick, New York native took a similar post with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2010, before returning to Calgary two seasons later to become their assistant general manager.

In 2016 he’d head to Saskatchewan to become the Roughriders assistant vice-president of player personnel and football operations.

Murphy’s entrance into the world of scouting was unique, as he started his own scouting service in 1999. His work with Next Level Scouting Inc. led to a job evaluating players for Yahoo! Sports, which eventually got him noticed by the Oakland Raiders, for whom he did some scouting in 2005.

He joined the Argos in early 2019 as a scout and personnel advisor before being elevated to his current role in early October of that year.

Murphy was not with the team in 2022 but returned as a consultant in 2023 and has subsequently returned to his role as assistant general manager.

A resident of Houston, Texas, Murphy attended Hofstra University.
