In July, the Argos announced that Rich Stubler was back in Toronto for a fourth time. He’ll be focused primarily on the defence but will essentially be assisting in all facets of the game.

Stubler began his coaching career 50 years ago, joining Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale, Colorado in 1971 as a defensive coach. He’d win a state championship there before moving on to the University of Colorado.

After a handful of NCAA stops, he’d make his way to Canada in 1983. Aside from stops with the NCAA’s Oregon Ducks and the Arena League’s Detroit Fury, Stubler has coached in the CFL since then with stops in Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, B.C., Edmonton and Calgary.

Stubler first came to Toronto as the defensive coordinator for Don Matthews in 1990, staying for one year.

He’d return as Mike “Pinball” Clemons defensive coordinator in 2003, orchestrating one of the best Argo defensive groups ever, culminating with a Grey Cup win in 2004. He was elevated to head coach in 2008.

In 2016 he’d return to Toronto as Scott Milanovch’s defensive coordinator.

Stubler has won five Grey Cups; with Hamilton in 1986, Edmonton in 1993, B.C. in 2000, Toronto in 2004 and Calgary in 2014.

The native of Garfield County, Colorado is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado.
