Acquired: Drafted by Toronto in the sixth round (45th overall) of the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft but returned to school for his final year of eligibility.

Career:

2017: Released by the club on August 1 after spending the first six games for the season on the club’s practice roster…re-signed by the club on August 7.

2016: Played in all 18 games, starting 12, in his eighth year with the Argonauts…Recorded 44 defensive tackles, 10 special teams tackles, one tackle for a loss, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass knockdown…Recorded a season-high six (6) tackles Week 3 at BC (July 7)…Recorded his 100th career defensive tackle in Week 11 vs. BC (Aug. 31)…Recorded career tackle No. 200 in Week 16 vs. CGY (Oct. 10).

 

2015: Played 15 games, starting in four, in his seventh season with the Double Blue, registered 23 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, one tackle for a loss and three fumble recoveries. Playoffs: Dressed in the Eastern Semi-Final at Hamilton he recorded two special teams tackles.

 

2014: Played in five regular season games, starting in one at FS registering 15 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

 

2013: Dressed in 16 regular season games, recording 11 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles and one interception, returned for 62 yards.  2013 Playoffs Dressed as DB with one tackle in Eastern Final loss against the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

 

2012: Dressed in all 18 regular season games for Toronto recording two defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, and returned four kickoffs for 86 yards. Playoffs: Dressed as a DB and a recorded one special teams tackle in an Eastern Semi-Final win against Edmonton. Dressed as DB and recorded one special teams tackle in an Eastern Final win against Montreal.

 

2011: Dressed in 18 regular season games for Toronto… Week 4, Dressed at backup CB and played ST in loss vs. Winnipeg…Made two special teams tackles…Week 5, Dressed at back CB and played ST scoring his first career TD in loss vs. Edmonton (29/07/11)…Scooped up a Damon Duval punt and raced it 81 yards for his first career touchdown then made a terrific ST tackle on the very next play, added 1 DT… Week 12, Dressed as backup CB and played ST in loss at Saskatchewan…Made 3 ST tackles.

 

2010: Dressed in all 18 regular season games during his second season in Toronto…Recorded seven defensive tackles and 13 special teams tackles while adding one punt return for one yard. Playoffs: Played in both of Toronto’s playoff games, recording one special teams tackle, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

 

2009: Signed by the Toronto Argonauts on March 10, 2009…Played in six games during his rookie season, registering five special teams tackles…Added three punt returns for 20 yards and one kickoff return for 19 yards.

Personal:

Matt majored in communications and minored in marketing at Saginaw Valley State (SVSU). While at SVSU, he was a First-Team All-GLIAC and Academic All-GLIAC selection. He attended Northern Secondary School in Toronto, where he received the Harry Jerome Award for excellence in athletics in 2004. Since his arrival in Toronto, he has been an ambassador of the Argos’ Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program as well as other community initiatives. Black is a member of the OVFL Hall of Fame after playing with the Metro Toronto Wildcats, where he was honoured as the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Back. Matt, his wife Erin and their daughter call Toronto home year round. Matt’s parents, Marlene and Donovan, also reside in Toronto. He is the oldest of the three Black children, including Argos teammate Eric Black and sister Destiny.
