WENDELL AVERY – Assistant Special Teams Coach
Wendell Avery enters his second season with the Toronto Argonauts in 2018 as the team’s Assistant Special Teams Coach. Avery joined the Argos staff in 2017 under the same capacity.
Following a playing career as a quarterback at the University of Minnesota, Avery began coaching with Division III Macalester College where he tutored quarterbacks and wide receivers.
After taking a break from football, he returned as the offensive coordinator at Winona State for two seasons (1990-91) before moving onto Alabama A&M where he’d again coach quarterbacks and receivers.
Following one season as the offensive coordinator at Savannah State (1994), Avery assumed the team’s head coaching duties for two seasons, recording a 12-10 record at the helm of the Tigers.
He’d move on from Savannah State to coach quarterbacks at Fort Valley State for a single season before securing his first NFL job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a post he held for two seasons.
