Argos sign four Americans

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts announced today the club has signed American RB/WR Kyle Lewis, American WR Brandon Sheperd, American DB Davontae Merriweather and American DB Chris Humes.

Lewis, 24, most recently spent time during the 2018 offseason with the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions after signing with the NFL clubs as an undrafted free agent. The 6’0, 207-pound dual threat and native of California spent four seasons at Cal Poly (2014-2017) where he caught 61 balls for 1,079 yards and 12 scores while adding 1,163 yards on the ground with 13 rushing touchdowns in 43 career games.

Sheperd, 6’1 and 195-pounds, was a member of the Indoor Football League’s 2019 Champion Sioux Falls Storm, where he had 874 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns over 14 regular season games. The St. Louis, Missouri native caught six passes for 115 yards and one touchdown in the IFL Championship game. Sheperd spent 2018 playing for the Sioux City Bandits of the Champions Indoor Football League where he caught 30 passes for 506 yards and 14 touchdowns. The receiver also earned a Carolina Panthers rookie camp invite coming out of college in 2016. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy spent four years in orange and black (2012-2015), hauling in 77 passes for 1,284 yards and 10 touchdowns in 38 career games.

Merriweather, 26, was named 2019 Defensive Player of the Year in the Indoor Football League after registering 103 tackles (led the league), three tackles for loss, four interceptions, one sack, two fumbles recoveries and 12 pass breakups for the Arizona Rattlers. In 2018, the California native tallied 52 tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. The 6’0, 200-pound DB spent two seasons at West Texas A&M (2015-2016) where he recorded 118 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions and two forced fumbles. Merriweather began his collegiate career at Saddleback College where he earned first team all-conference honours after compiling 55 tackles, three forced fumbles and seven interceptions and one touchdown.

Humes, 25, spent six games with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the past two seasons, making 19 defensive tackles, two special teams tackles and one interception. The 6’0, 200-pound DB was signed by the Oakland Raiders in 2017 and over four preseason games added seven tackles. The former Arkansas State Red Wolf (2012-2016) finished his collegiate career with 180 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles and two touchdowns.
