Five things to know about RJ Harris and Chuck Jacobs

On February 2, the Toronto Argonauts signed a pair of free agent wide receivers in R.J. Harris and Chuck Jacobs. Here are five things you need to know about the newest additions in Double Blue.

R.J. Harris

1) While his hometown is listed as Ordenton, Maryland, the 6-0, 201-pound receiver is actually a native of Germany. Harris was born in Wurzburg, Germany, the same city that 13-time NBA All-Star Dirk Nowitzki calls home.

2) Harris has spent time with both the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints over the last two seasons, after originally signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2015. In three preseason games with the Saints in 2016, he recorded five receptions for 40 yards.

3) During his second training camp with the Saints, Harris learned every position in the team’s playbook, taking after Saints receivers Willie Snead and Lance Moore. Ultimately, his efforts did not result in a roster spot but did showcase the young receiver’s drive to play football and his willingness to adapt.

4) The former Wildcat holds the University of New Hampshire and Colonial Athletic Association record for all-time receptions (310) and ranks second on both lists in receiving yardage (4,238). Harris also holds the UNH single-season record for receptions (100) and receiving yards (1,551) while posting the second-most touchdown receptions in school history (36) and fourth-most in conference history.

5) Before taking his talents to the UNH, Harris played wide receiver and defensive back at Arundel High School where he also lettered in basketball. He left Arundel with five school records and two state records, including the Maryland single-game reception record (20). In his senior year, Harris scored a state-record 28 touchdowns while averaging 138 receiving yards per game.

Chuck Jacobs

1) The native of Richmond, California, originally signed with the team’s practice roster October 6, 2016, along with fellow receivers Jameon Lewis (Mississippi State) and Joe Morgan (Walsh). Having spent the final month of the season on the practice roster, Jacobs will enter 2017 training camp with a head start on learning the nuances of the CFL game.

2) Jacobs is an alumnus of Utah State, where he played in 26 games, starting 11, in two seasons with the Aggies. He ranked third on the team in receiving yards in both seasons while tying for the team lead in touchdown receptions during his senior campaign in which he earned Honorable Mention All-WAC. Prior to his time with the Aggies, Jacobs attended Laney Community College, a junior college in Oakland where he played alongside current Denver Broncos running back CJ Anderson.

3) Jacobs has spent time on two NFL rosters, playing in preseason action for the San Francisco 49ers between 2013 and 2015 before taking the field with the Baltimore Ravens during training camp in 2016. As a rookie with the 49ers, the Utah State product hauled in six receptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns in four preseason games. During his NFL journey, he crossed paths with current Argonauts Devon Wylie (SF – 2014), Shawn Lemon (SF – 2015), and Joe Morgan (BAL – 2015).

4) Jacobs attended high school at John F. Kennedy High School in Richmond, California, where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track. As a basketball player, Jacobs led the Eagles to a 27-6 record in his senior season. During his NFL tenure, the California native established a football camp at his alma mater in an effort to support the youth of the community.

5) Jacobs grew up in a family of 13 children, along with five brothers and seven sisters.
