CONFERENCE JOINS PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES WITH STUDENT LEADERS TO INCREASE BULLYING AWARENESS AND FORMULATE PREVENTION STRATEGIES

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club, in partnership with the Canadian Safe School Network, is proud to celebrate another year of its award-winning Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons, with a Student Summit on Tuesday, May 5, at the University of Toronto’s new Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. The summit will unite Argonauts players and cheerleaders with high school and elementary students who attended a Huddle Up presentation in the past year. Argonauts players who have played an active role in Huddle Up and who will attend the summit include SB Chad Owens, OL Jeff Keeping, WR Natey Adjei, linebackers James Yurichuk and Jonathan Hood, as well DBs Matt Ware and Matt Black.

This year Huddle Up has partnered with PrevNet, a national network of researchers and organizations working together to stop bullying in Canada. In addition to a keynote speech by Toronto Argonauts’ Director of Education & Community Programs Jason Colero, two former Huddle Up committee members from the GTA who have been personally affected by bullying will share their stories with the conference. Students will participate in bullying scenarios led by Argos players, cheerleaders, Tim Hortons store owners and players from the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team, which will invite them to identify bullying behaviour and create plans of action to confront these situations in the real world.

The Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons, has been in place for 14 years to improve the lives of GTA students by providing them with knowledge and tactics to eradicate bullying and promote healthy, inclusive relationships. Toronto Argonauts players and cheerleaders have proudly worked with program staff to make a positive difference in the lives of Toronto-area youth since 2001. Since 2009, the Huddle Up program has been recognized on the Ministry of Education’s Registry of Bullying Prevention Programs. The Argonauts are the only Canadian professional sports franchise to earn this recognition.
