TORONTO – For the third year in a row, two historic organizations with a demonstrated commitment to community involvement have joined forces to change another student’s life forever!

At a special luncheon on Friday, the Rotary Club of Toronto and the Toronto Argonauts Football Club will officially award John Chen  from Northern Secondary School, of the Toronto District School Board, a four-year post-secondary academic scholarship.

Argonauts’ Executive Chairman & CEO, Chris Rudge commented, “Our commitment to the local community continues to be among our franchise’s top priorities. We are very pleased to have again partnered with our friends at the Rotary Club of Toronto to offer another local student this kind of life-changing opportunity. John has demonstrated his commitment to our community, his school and his academics. He can now focus fully on his post-secondary academics without the potential distraction of financial burden.”

John, a grade 12 student, earned this one-of-kind scholarship by submitting an application outlining his academic achievements, contributions to his community and Northern Secondary School, and displaying financial need. John will be attending the University of Toronto and his tuition will be fully paid for all four years that he attends. John will also be invited to the Argonauts’ August 12th home game where his successes will be acknowledged in front of thousands of Argos fans during an on-field presentation.

Richard White, President 2013-2014 of The Rotary Club of Toronto said, “”John Chen is completing the Gifted Program at Northern Secondary with a 95% average in his top 6 courses and has been accepted into at the University of Toronto in both Engineering Science and at the Rotman School of Business. John has been involved in many areas at his school as founder of the Military History Club, president of the Investment Club and co-President, manager and player on the award-winning Northern Chess Team. As a volunteer, John had served as an Administrator on the Canadian Youth Project’s Junior Board of Directors, volunteered as a summer camp counsellor at the Toronto Cross-Cultural Services Association and served as a youth participant in a mandarin-language discussion group at the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter. He has spent numerous hours working as a tutor and child supervisor. We wish John every success as moves into his chosen field of endeavor.”
