TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is saddened to learn that former defensive captain DT Bruce Smith has passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 63 years old.
The Argos signed Smith before the 1976 season and he went on to anchor a defensive line that included the likes of All-Time Argo Jim Corrigall and all-star Granville Liggins. Smith dressed in 44 regular season games for Toronto between 1976-1979.
Raised in Huntsville, Texas, Smith attended the University of Colorado, at Boulder, before joining the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He a won a Grey Cup championship as a rookie for the ‘Cats in 1972. He also played for Edmonton and Ottawa before joining the Double Blue.
Smith retired as an Argonaut and made his home in Toronto where he owned a successful real estate business and became a well known public speaker. He was also a children’s book author, as well as Chaplain for King Bay Chaplaincy and Upper Canada College’s Chaplain Service.
The entire Toronto Argonauts organization would like to send its deepest sympathy to Bruce’s wife Shirley and their children Courtne and Coby.
