
Rex Norris
Defensive Line Coach
Acquired: Named Defensive Line Coach on February 6, 2009.
There may not be a coach anywhere with more defensive line knowledge than Rex Norris. He’s been employed to train and scheme for defensive linemen on four different NFL teams, was entrusted as the Defensive Line Coach, Defensive Coordinator and Head Coach at six of the top NCAA division 1A football programs, including two national championship teams, and has been part of two championship runs in NFL Europe.
Norris was most recently the Defensive Line Coach/Defensive Coordinator for the Amsterdam Admirals (2004-06) of NFL Europa. Together, with Bart Andrus as Head Coach, Norris’ defence paved the way for two World Bowl appearances in 2005 and 2006. Prior to that, he was the Defensive Line Coach for the Chicago Bears (1999-2002) under Head Coach Dick Jauron, as well as the Houston Oilers, later Tennessee Titans (1995-98), under Head Coach Jeff Fisher, Wade Phillips’ Denver Broncos (1994) and the Detroit Lions (1985-87) led by Daryl Rogers.
Norris’ resume also includes positions at some of the most prestigious programs in college football. He’s been the Defensive Line Coach at Texas (1992-93), Tennessee (1990-91) and Florida (1988-89) where he coached in two bowl games and helped develop long-time NFL player, Trace Armstrong. Between stops at Arizona State (1984), where he was Defensive Line Coach before taking on the title of Interim Head Coach, and Texas A&M (1972) as Defensive Line Coach, he served 11-years as Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach and Assistant Head Coach at the University of Oklahoma (1973-83). There, he won two national championships, in 1974 & 1975, and was responsible for the development of the legendary Selmon brothers, Lee Roy and Dewey.
Rex lives in Horseshoe Bay, Texas with his wife Melinda. He has four children - Whitney, Rex Jr., Amanda and Nolan - and holds a Bachelor of Science and a Masters degree in Education from East Texas State.
