TORONTO – Trevor Harris is making Scott Milanovich’s job very difficult.
One of five quarterbacks in Argos Training Camp and one third of the pivots vying to sit in the number 3 spot on the depth chart behind Ricky Ray and Jarious Jackson, Harris put together another impressive performance against Montreal Tuesday afternoon after a strong debut last week in Hamilton.
Easily the most efficient quarterback on the field in the pre-season finale, Harris led all pivots with 160 yards and two touchdowns on 13 of 15 passing. His second touchdown toss, a five yard-strike to WR Samie Parker, capped off a 93-yard march and eventually sealed a 25-20 victory for Toronto.
"Trevor seems to have some moxy, a presence back there and a little bit of the 'it' factor," said Milanovich. "He has done it two weeks in a row, which is impressive.
"He seems very comfortable in the pocket, he seems to know where everybody is, he's accurate with his throws and is very locked in. He looked very good."
Standing in Harris’ way in making the active roster is former Alouettes backup Ricky Santos, who was added to Toronto’s roster over the weekend.
"To be honest, I really felt I left some plays out on the field," Harris said after the game. "I did everything I could to ensure I had no regrets."
Harris’ two performances, combined with the experience of Santos, makes the looming cut-down process a challenging one for the Argos’ rookie sideline boss, but given the struggles that the Double Blue have had at that position the past few seasons it may be a good problem to have.
"We have five good quarterbacks in camp right now, and we like them all. Trevor's done a great job, I don't have enough good things to say”, explained Milanovich.
“It's not easy to come into a new system where you're not getting many reps, period. And then to go out and perform in situations we've asked him to, which is coming out in the third quarter and being behind, and two weeks in a row he's done a nice job at kind of turning the tide and giving us the lead back, and so that's impressive”
Following the game, Milanovich wasn’t sure how his roster as a whole, let alone the quarterback position, is going to take shape but the club does have options.
"We would like to get our team down to 46 as quickly as possible, I would anticipate us doing much of it at some point tomorrow, I can't anticipate at this point whether we'll be able to knock out much of it. We're going go back and watch the film and make some evaluations and try to get as close as we can to picking our team, that's what basically the next 24-48 hours are going to be."
Coach Milanovich stayed true to his word and made a full set of cuts today. For a full list of cuts, click here for a full list of the teams transactions.
