ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is thrilled to announce that non-import WR Spencer Watt has avoided free agency and signed with the club through the 2014 season.

Commented Toronto Argonauts’ General Manager Jim Barker, “Spencer just finished his third CFL season and he’s still only 24 years old. He is an athletic, young Canadian receiver and we believe he played his best football during the second half of last season. We expect that he’ll continue to grow and develop into a top receiver in this league and we’re excited to have him in Toronto for the future.”

In 17 games this season, the North Vancouver native caught 34 passes for 424 yards; both were career highs. In three seasons as an Argonaut, Watt has hauled in 77 receptions for 970 yards and three (3) touchdowns.

Watt remarked, “I am really excited that I will be able to continue my career with the team that drafted me in 2010. From the beginning of 2012, up until the point that we reached our ultimate goal of winning the 100th Grey Cup, the players and coaching staff were like a tightly knit family and I am happy to continue to work with this group of talented and hard-working men. I love the city of Toronto and I am thrilled to say that I will be an Argonaut for years to come.”

In 2012, Watt’s best game statistically came in Week 12 at BC Place against the Lions, where he made three receptions for 102 yards. The highlight of that performance came on a leaping 47-yard reception right down the middle of the field, and it landed him as a #5 seed in the argonauts.ca 2012 Plays of the Year bracket.

Watt was drafted in the third round (18th overall) of the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft out of Simon Fraser University. During his rookie season, Watt earned CFL Canadian Player of the Week honours for his Week 19 performance against the Montreal Alouettes after having six (6) receptions for 140 yards and two (2) touchdowns.

The Argos also announced that import RB Adonis Thomas has signed a contract with the Club. Thomas attended Toledo for four years where he made Second Team ALL-MAC and ranked second in the conference with an average 84.5 rushing yards per game as a senior.  Thomas most recently attended Cleveland Browns’ mini-camp.
