On Tuesday, December 8 at 10:00 p.m. ET, The Biography Channel will air a one hour episode entitled, Biography: John Candy (for more information about the show, air dates and times, please click here).
The larger-than-life Torontonian with a heart to match was known for his family-friendly fare, appearing in nearly 40 films. He enjoyed performing as much as he adored football and his hometown Toronto Argonauts. The loveable and passionate owner of the club, from 1991 until his untimely death in 1994, was not only revered by Argos fans, players and staff but some still believe that he actually bled Double Blue.
After college, Candy became a member of the famed Second City Comedy Troupe. The success of Second City TV propelled John to Hollywood during the height of its “Canadian Invasion.” Films like The Blues Brothers and Stripes catapulted him to fame thanks to his large, lovable persona. In 1991, John, along with hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, purchased the Toronto Argonauts and brought Raghib ‘Rocket’ Ismail to Canada where they teamed to bring the Grey Cup to Toronto.
John’s bright career was cut short in 1994 when, while filming on location in Mexico, Candy died from a massive heart attack at the age of 43. Today, he is still universally loved and remembered fondly thanks to his buffoonish jokes, infectious smile, and side-splitting impersonations.
