Cp24’s Nathan Downer Joins Argos As In-stadium Announcer

Toronto, ON – As announced this morning on CP24 BREAKFAST, CP24 Reporter Nathan Downer will join the Toronto Argonauts for the 2009 season as the team’s new in-stadium announcer. Beginning with the annual Fan Day on June 14, Downer will be heard calling the plays and making announcements for Argos fans at every home game as the in-stadium “Voice of the Argos”.

“As a longstanding fan of Argos football and the CFL, this truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to contribute to this storied franchise,” said Nathan Downer. “I look forward to being a part of what promises to be an exciting football season and many seasons to come.”

Argos President and CEO Bob Nicholson remarked, “We are thrilled to have CP24’s Nathan Downer come on-board as part of the Argos game-day experience.  He is a consummate professional who can capture and bring to our stadium all of the excitement and energy that is Argos football. The Argonauts are also excited to begin a partnership with CP24, a station with values similar to the Argos – locally focused, engaged and passionate.”

“CP24 is thrilled to be working with such a well-recognized and respected organization. The Argos not only produce great family-friendly sports entertainment, but also work tirelessly as a committed community partner,” added CP24’s Vice President and General Manager Bob McLaughlin. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Nathan and the CP24 brand to develop a strong partnership that will continue over the course of the season.”

Downer comes to the Argos with a wealth of media and sports experience. In 2000, he launched and hosted a sports show on FLOW 93.5, before earning the coveted position of news director. In 2002, Nathan moved to television and worked as a sideline reporter covering university football and basketball. At that time, he began to make several guest appearances on sports television shows, including TSN’s Off the Record. He was also hired to write the ‘last page’ for the Raptor Insider Magazine. One year after making his television debut, Nathan joined Global TV where he worked as a reporter, earning three RTNDA awards along the way – including a national prize for a feature story.

Like the Toronto Argonauts, Nathan is committed to community work. The University of Toronto and George Brown College alumnus enjoys hosting community events and is an active member of the Canadian Association of Black Journalists. He’s also involved with charity work, including Camp Jumoke, which helps children with Sickle Cell Anemia.
